UW-Madison, Wisconsin
Madison, the capitol of Wisconsin, is a city of 200,000 and home to 41,000 University of Wisconsin students. The UW-Madison is considered one of the more liberal or progressive campuses in the U.S. and has a history of radical student activity. Home to this "Berkley of the Midwest," Madison has been called one of the "mostLibrary_Mall_Capitol_V01.jpg enlightened towns" in America.

Both the city of Madison and the University of Wisconsin have gained national recognition over the years. In 1996 and 1998, People magazine voted Madison the "number one place to live." The UW is known for its significant medical research and life-saving procedures. In 2004, the UW found itself at the forefront of human cloning debates.

Madison, proud of its progressive thinking and tolerance, will continue to affect state and national politics, philosophy, entertainment, and education.

In 1848, after intense conflict with the Native Americans over lands, Wisconsin became a state. Madison, built on the isthmus between two lakes, became the capitol several years later.

Birth of the University
The University of Wisconsin began soon after, and has since impacted the sciences, arts, and politics. Alumni include U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, author Eudora Welty, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, aviator Charles Lindbergh, and movie producers David and Jerry Zucker.

The UW is not only famous for discovering vitamin A and being the first to cultivate embryonic stem cells in a lab, it is also infamous for student uprisings. In 1970, anti-Vietnam war radicals detonated a bomb in front of the building that housed the Army Math Research Center. Student protests became so severe that the national guard was called, with deadly results.

Scholars_study97_10.jpg In 1961, the University's first study-abroad program sent students to India. Now, nearly ten percent of the student population is international, many coming from Asia.

The University of Wisconsin is poised to be a great influencer of nations as it continues to educate the future leaders of the world.
