“By our efforts, we have lit a fire in the minds of men. It warms those who feel its power, it burns those who fight its progress, and one day this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world.”

This cry for freedom echoes around the world. It echoes behind dark curtains in Indian brothels. It echoes through African villages ravaged by drought. It echoes in the hilltribes of Myanmar where young boys are kidnapped and forced to become soldiers. So long as just one of us is bound, none of us is free.

Rescue Ops DTS will answer the cry from every man, woman, boy and girl who long to be free. The journey to find them is long and fraught with peril. We must be strong. We must be bold. We must “endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” (2 Tim. 2:3)

Our bodies must be fit, our minds sharp, and our spirits entwined with God if we are to encounter the darkness and overcome it with the light. We will begin with three months of bootcamp and lecture in Madison, WI. The day will begin at the crack of dawn with physical training and workouts. We will then join the Children at Risk DTS for several hours of worship, lecture and small group to train our hearts and minds to think as God thinks, act as God acts. The afternoons will include practical skills training that will be invaluable on the mission field (auto repair, construction, clean water initiatives, etc.). We will also break away from Madison for camping trips and wilderness survival training for a couple weeks.

After bootcamp, we will spend two months overseas. Outreach will take you to the darkest corners of the earth where the cry for freedom echoes the loudest. Past DTSes have gone to India, Thailand, Myanmar, Uganda and Kenya. On outreach, we will work with street kids, slum communities, sex slaves and refugees, as well as reach out to people of all ages through evangelism.

Rescue Ops DTS is the first step in our plans to develop rescue teams to free child soldiers, sex slaves, child laborers, and refugees.

“Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors. He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them. He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for their lives are precious to him.” (Ps. 72:4,12-14)

To learn more about the Discipleship Training School, visit the YWAM DTS homepage. (Rescue Ops DTS is everything that a YWAM DTS is, plus an additional focus on developing rescue teams.) If you are interested in receiving additional information or attending, please contact dts@ywammadison.org.

These aren’t made up stories or statistics. They are real people in our world today. We have met them. We have listened to their horror stories. And most of all, we have heard their cries for help.

The question is: Will you?

Isaiah 61 declares that God has sent YOU to bring good news to the poor. He has sent YOU to comfort the broken hearted. And He has sent YOU to free the prisoners. Are you ready to answer God’s call and help those who are hurting?

The Justice & Compassion DTS tackles the great injustices of our day – human trafficking, poverty, the orphan crisis, HIV & AIDS…. In the face of injustice, we long to become a helper to the helpless, a father to the fatherless, and a voice to the voiceless. We believe that God calls us to reach out as His hands that feed the hungry, heal the sick and comfort the hurting. We will bring beauty from ashes.

Our journey begins in Madison, Wisconsin. For three months, we will gather alongside the University DTS for worship, lecture and small group. In the evenings, we will break away from the UDTS to examine injustice in search of God’s redemption. We will hear stories from the field of work among the poor, refugees and victims of human trafficking. Throughout our journey, we will discover God’s strategies to restore hope to the hopeless.

Cafe Nights

During our time in Madison, we will host several cafe-like events where we will use the arts (photography, video, fine arts, dance, spoken word, etc.) to awaken the imagination of our generation to injustice and stir them into action.

Outreach

Following our three month training phase, we will head overseas for ten weeks of outreach. We will help people living in absolute poverty, struggling with life’s addictions, or suffering from painful disseases. We will reach out to refugees, street children, AIDS orphans, or women who have been sexually abused, trafficked or enslaved. Past outreaches have gone to Thailand, India, China, Myanmar, Malaysia, Mexico, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia.

YWAM Madison offers you the unique opportunity to complete this outreach immediately following your classroom phase or return the following summer for outreach.

To learn more about the Discipleship Training School, visit the YWAM DTS Homepage. (Justice & Compassion DTS is everything that a YWAM DTS is plus an additional focus on showing compassion to the poor and needy.) Location: YWAM Madison Global Mission Center (4802 Dakota Dr. Madison, WI)

Raising support can feel like one of our greatest challenges as missionaries. But it doesn’t have to stay that way!

Join us for a one-week YWAM Fundraising Workshop that will give you the tools you need to succeed. Veteran YWAMers, Wick Nease and Steve Pontius, will share inspirational stories and concrete steps you can implement to radically increase your support. Whether you are in YWAM or serving with another ministry, you will benefit from this training.

Wick Nease joined YWAM in 1972. He served as YWAM North America’s Central District Director for a number of years. As Director, he noticed one common struggle. Missionaries would start strong, but end up leaving the field because they lacked funding.

To address this issue, Wick & Steve started running a one-week fundraising seminar for YWAM staff. In the first year, hundreds of staff attended. As staff implemented the strategies in the fundraising seminar, their support doubled that year! This trend continued. People who would have left the field could now accomplish the vision God gave them!

YWAM Fundraising Workshop includes:

The biblical basis for fundraising

Inspirational stories of God’s provision

How to develop and refine your vision/mission statement

How to develop a fundraising packet

How to set up fundraising trips

How to grow a support team

How to communicate with your support team (newsletters, blogs, phone, gifts, etc.)

How to maintain relationships with your donors

The beautiful scent of Indian flowers hits my nose as our new friends greet us and place an intricate “lei” over our heads.

Our first “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore” experience is trying to fit all our luggage and people into the cars! That in itself makes this trip worth it already. Five of us sit barricaded by luggage in the jeep as we wait for the drivers to pile five more bags of luggage on the roof. One of the men monkey-climbs up and down the side of the car, situating the bags. After about fifteen minutes, we are off!

We pulled into traffic amidst a cacophony of honking. I can’t even imagine what will await us outside the airport walls.

I stare out the window, trying not to blink – I don’t want to miss a thing. Even though it is still dark, I quickly realize that the beautifully constructed airport and hotels are just a facade for what the city and India really hold.

This is the part people don’t want to see: poverty, children searching for food in dumpsters, brokenness, and people waiting to be seen, to be loved.

Women outside their home

The team’s emotions are at an all-time-high, some on the verge of tears. Excitement, nervousness, wonder, curiosity, apprehension, anxiety, exhaustion, and hunger sweep over all of us. It’s been a long two days of travel, twelve hours from Chicago to Abu Dhabi, three hours from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai, and now another three hour drive into Pune. We won’t get to work for a few days–today is all about taking India in.

The sun begins to rise over the peaks of the mountains while we continue winding through them. As light floods all around us, we are hit with awe. This is the first time we’ve really seen what India looks like. I scan around to see my other team members–Jackie, Kara, Allison, and Amy. Their gaze is fixed to the window, like mine.

“What’s your first impression?” I asked.

“Beautiful,” says Jackie.

And it’s true. I think this is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. How this beauty and poverty can coexist is astounding to me. Then something hits me: this extreme beauty is God. God is here within the poverty, His love so deep for the people he decides to bury himself with them. So no matter where they look, his beauty and creation proves his love to them.

Before I came here, people told me India was one of the darkest places in the world. I’d like to differ. I’d like to see the light and beauty of God here rather than the darkness of the enemy.

If all we saw here was the darkness it would overwhelm us, but by seeing the light in the darkness, that’s when we can start to make a change, start to really show love. Isn’t that why we’re here?

Through lectures, discussions, small group interaction, community living, assignments and research, you will discover new strategies to rescue and restore children at risk.

The stories of children around the world are staggering. Throughout the world millions of children are orphaned through war, through AIDS, through extreme poverty. Every seven seconds a child dies from a preventable disease. Drug addiction runs rampant. Children are sold into prostitution or forced to become child soldiers. They’re lost and they have no place to live. These children have no hope. And these are the ones that are on the heart of God.

The Children at Risk Seminar will focus on the needs of children around the world and the issues that put them at risk — sex trafficking, poverty, AIDS, abuse, child soldiers, and broken families. We will also focus on the heart of God who promises to be a “Father to the fatherless, who sets the lonely in families.” (Psalm 68:5,6)

Children at Risk Internships (Ministry Partners)

For graduates of the Children at Risk School, the possibilities really are endless. Around the world, there are over 1000 YWAM ministries working with children at risk. Every one of these ministries has one pressing problem: the vision and the needs outnumber the workers. Often, a ministry’s greatest hindrance to receiving potential workers is that people are unaware of the need and what can be done to help. Our goal is to bridge the gap between children’s ministries (like schools, orphanages, street kids ministries, etc.) and children’s workers. After you complete the Children at Risk school, we can help place you as an intern to receive on the job training with children at risk.

Contained in these pages, you will find opportunities for networking, training or interning with children at risk ministries around the world. The opportunities highlighted here are just a few of the many who can receive workers and equip them with on-the-job training.

If you are interested in another location, please contact Paul Allen via Paul@ywammadison.org. We want to do everything we can to see new workers trained and sent to work with children at risk. We will even help you research, prep and plan for CAR internships or pioneering of new ministries.

Mad*Reach: Youth Group Outreaches to Madison

Mad*Reach is a week long outreach in Madison that reaches out to the homeless, the poor and the fatherless. We partner with youth groups and youth pastors to offer discipleship training and outreach opportunities that intensify growth in teenagers lives. Your students are gifted and have a unique role to play in the world. We want to help you develop your students’ gifts and see how they can make a difference today! Mad*Reach is a concentrated week designed for groups of students, often youth groups, to grow in their relationship with God, to learn how to better hear His voice, and to experience God’s compassion for those around them. Students learn how to share the Gospel and how to apply these things after returning home.

Rescue Ops Thailand/Cambodia: Human Trafficking

Around the world, there are more than 27 million victims of human trafficking. Thailand is a major hub for this illegal trade. Thai and hill tribe women and children are trafficked to Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, Bahrain, Australia, Singapore, Europe, Canada and the United States for sexual and labor exploitation. Within the country women are trafficked from the impoverished Northeast and the North to Bangkok for sexual exploitation. The statistics are staggering and sometimes paralyzing. But imagine the difference we can make when we focus our attention on one city… one person… one life changed forever. Rescue Ops will go to Thailand and reach out to the women and children in the red light districts and slums. The cost of this mission trip is $895+airfare. Click here for more info.
Rescue Ops Japan: Women & Children at Risk

Japan is a nation in crisis. Earthquakes and tsunamis have ravaged the countryside and left many hurting people in their wake. Rescue Ops will go to Japan and spread hope to a people that have every reason to despair.
Rescue Ops Kenya: Community Development

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren’t strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses. 90% of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are to children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable. The UN predicts that one tenth of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply and sanitation. Rescue Ops will send a team to a rural community in Kenya where villagers spend hours a day retrieving dirty water. By the time we leave, their lives will be changed forever with access to the world’s most precious resource ~ clean water. The cost of this mission trip is $895+airfare. Click here for more info.
Badger Up: London Olympic Games

The nations will flock to London for the Olympic Games in the summer of 2012. We will partner with YWAM London to reach the city, the athletes and their fans. We will reach out through evangelism, intercession and practical work to combat human trafficking. YWAM London/The Forever Team believes there is a door of opportunity open for us in 2012 in the UK that we cannot miss. Helena (who leads the Forever Teams) exhorts, “Young people are vital agents for what God is already doing, and will continue to do.” Join us for this opportunity of a lifetime!

Access Nicaragua

Access is your summer adventure with God! It’s not a “typical” youth outreach. You won’t just build houses and visit far off places. You will change the world! Access is a hybrid leadership camp and missions trip led by a team of experienced missionaries who believe teens can change nations. David was only 17 when he killed Goliath. Samuel was only 8 when he heard God’s voice and started leading a nation. And Esther was only 15 when she saved her people from genocide.

Access will lead a team of teens to Nicaragua. There, we will work with kids and teens from very poor neighborhoods. We will reach out to them through soccer ministry, evangelism, VBS and Bible Distribution. And we will demonstrate the love of a Father who never leaves them.

By Jen, University DTS student

We’ve been in the city for a couple of weeks now, and so much has happened in my heart already. Of course everyone who travels will say that. But I certainly didn’t expect my heart to pound out such a loud a rhythm of love for the people here.

One of our first days, we went sightseeing to immerse ourselves in this new culture. Being here is like nowhere I’ve ever been. Instead of letters that form words I might eventually recognize, I see characters drawn everywhere. I don’t know if I’ve seen the same one twice yet.

It’s hot and the air is thick with exhaust, dust, and the smells of nearly 20 million people living in one city. By mid-afternoon, we were ready for a break. I sat near the side of the street and people-watched. Several people ate fresh, juicy cantaloupe on a stick as they walked by. Some stopped to throw away trash in a bin near me. After each person threw something away, a man fished through the bin to find it. He ate whatever was left or pocketed some treasure that he could sell or trade later.

“This man deserves so much more than other peoples’ waste!” I thought. That’s when this pounding rhythm in my heart grew louder. I couldn’t ignore it.

I found the vendor who sold the bright orange cantaloupe and bought one. When I gave it to the man, a wide smile stretched across his face. He looked giddy, like he couldn’t contain his delight.

There are more than a billion people in this country. It’s easy to look at that number and wonder what giving one stick of cantaloupe to one man on one street could accomplish. But I know in that moment, the juicy cantaloupe refreshed this man, brightened his eyes. In that moment, he felt like he mattered. Maybe today he doesn’t remember the foreigner who gave it to him, but I know I won’t forget. Because in that moment my heart beat with God’s heart and the sound it made was L-O-V-E.

***

Part Two

Our team leader encouraged us to spread out into the train station and “take a risk with God” as we met people, His treasures. You could even say we were “treasure hunting.” Back home, we had prayed for the people we would meet here. When we prayed, one of my friends had a picture come to mind of a blue cast. I wondered if during this “treasure hunt” we would meet anyone with a blue cast.

As my friends and I waited for the train to come, a man approached us to ask for money. I turned around and my eyes must have widened a bit. There, on his left arm, was a blue cast.

My heart started that familiar rhythm again, you know the one: when everything else fades to the background and a spotlight finds you in that scene, at that moment, and time stops.

“Can we pray for you?” my friend, Jeremiah, asked. He must have felt the time-stopping spotlight, too.

But the man hurried away.

He must not have understood. We looked through our dictionaries and figured out how to ask him in his language. The man was not hard to find. “Can we pray for you?” Jeremiah asked again.

Again, the man left. But this time we couldn’t find him.

Half an hour later, we were approached by another beggar with an infected foot. We didn’t have money for him, so he, too left. I wasn’t going to let him go so easily. You see, time stood still again, my heart in my throat.

The angry infection on his foot looked so painful, and the dirty street would do nothing to heal it.

“I’m going to ask to clean his foot,” I announced.

Armed with some first aid supplies, my friends and I set out to find him. He was in a corner, still begging for money but being ignored by everyone who passed by. With the help of a translator, I asked him if I could clean the wound on his foot.

“I want to just cut it (my foot) off,” he said, cleaning the sore with an antiseptic wipe. “It will only get worse. I’m trying to get enough money for the operation.”

We prayed with him and I felt the presence of God with me. Again, all else faded to the background and it was just us there, loving this man with the love of God. I prayed that God would heal him so he wouldn’t lose his foot. When I opened my eyes, I was surprised to see that a crowd had formed around us. People were even snapping pictures.

I realized my hands were sweaty and I was shaking a little bit. What is happening to me? I wondered. What’s happening in my heart?

I thought about the man with the cantaloupe, the man with the blue cast, and now this man with the wounded foot. I continue to feel like I cannot do enough to show these people the love of God.

The rhythm in my heart is still changing from what it was, it is still beating with God’s.

L-O-V-E.

“Be joyful at your feasts together with the orphans.” Deuteronomy 16:14

At YWAM Madison, we believe that loss is not the end of the line for children at risk. We long to restore hope & joy to orphans & street kids. Our Children at Risk DTS teams put great effort into spoiling these kids. We plan extravagant parties and special outings. We deliver piles of gifts, toys, and gently used clothes and shoes. We engineer craft & game times. And we are looking for your help!

Option 1 – Become a Spoil the Kids Wish List Donor

Spoil the Kids Wish List Donors collect items from our Spoil the Kids Wish List. All items collected should be shipped or dropped off at our YWAM Madison main office.

YWAM Madison
ATTN: Spoil the Kids
4802 Dakota Dr.
Madison, WI 53704.

We will then send these items with our outreach teams to take to orphans and street kids around the world.

Option 2 – Plan a Party in a Bag

Party in a Bag Planners come up with a party idea for our outreach teams to use for orphans. Briefly outline your idea on paper and collect all the items necessary for our team to host that party. All these items should be put in a suitcase which should weigh less than 50 pounds. This suitcase would be shipped or dropped off at our main office.

YWAM Madison
ATTN: Spoil the Kids
4802 Dakota Dr.
Madison, WI 53704.

We will then take these items with our outreach teams and deliver them to orphans and street kids around the world.

(For Example – you could plan a pirate party and collect items to make pirate hats as a craft + send sugar cookie mixes that we could make cookies for the kids in the shape of treasure chests and send little candies along to decorate the cookies as the treasures. You also might want to throw in a few cookie cutters! You get the idea. Let your imagination go wild. :D)

Option 3 – Become a Spoil the Kids Cash Donor

As we host these parties in other countries, many of the items we need are much simpler and cheaper to buy there rather than to bring with us. Plus it helps the local economy and creates jobs. Lack of jobs is often a huge problem behind the children at risk crisis. In addition, it usually costs us $50-$100 in round trip luggage fees to transport the Spoil the Kids gifts & supplies overseas.

Consider donating to our Spoil the Kids fund. 100% of proceeds given to this fund will go to hosting special events for orphans and street kids.

You can mail checks to
YWAM Madison Accounting
ATTN: Spoil the Kids
PO BOX 8503
Madison, WI 53708

You can also donate online using paypal. All donations are tax-deductible.
